Microsoft has announced that they will be ending the sale of Windows XP effective 10/22/2010. As part of this effort, all OEM partners also plan to discontinue Windows XP on new PC purchases made after this date (Dell email excerpt below):

XP Downgrade will stop shipping Oct. 22nd 2010

What is happening?

Per Microsoft direction all OEM partners, including Dell, must have all Windows XP systems SHIPPED by October 22nd 2010.  This means that any orders in production or in any other status but shipped will be cancelled and replaced with Windows 7 if they have not left the factory.

Is this only for Dell PCs?

No, this is a Microsoft directive for all OEM partners.

What if my customer has legacy applications or proprietary software that isn’t compatible with Windows 7?

Dell offers Windows XP Mode as a factory installed option for our customers when they purchase Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate.  This feature allows customers to run XP applications in a virtual XP environment.

What does this mean for you?

For businesses still running Windows XP this should not be cause for concern.  Windows 7 includes functionality that will allow you to continue running your legacy Windows XP applications. However, we recommend that planning begin soon to best leverage these upcoming changes, and Windows 7, into your existing IT infrastructure. DNG is here to help.  Call us with any questions about these changes or to discuss the best path forward for your business.
